Some Other Place (S.O.P.)
The S.O.P. Back-to-School Store welcomes new or gently used clothing and school supplies for distribution to low-income families in August. Volunteers may sign-up to assist clients as they move among the various booths. A sewing group from Calder (Sewing Seeds of Love) also makes simple book bags and jumpers.
The S.O.P. Thanksgiving Store relies on canned food drives and cash donations to supply deserving families with everything they need to enjoy a traditional meal over the holiday. We collect canned goods during Pumpkin Fest and throughout November to support this effort. Volunteers can sign-up to host client families as they arrive to pick up their groceries. On the second Wednesday of every month, our members prepare lunch in the S.O.P. kitchen for hungry or homeless people. Prep crew gathers at 8:30 a.m. and the serving line opens at 11:30 a.m. “A Tasting for Some Other Place” gives our members an annual opportunity each August to support this community-wide fundraising event. Volunteer to make candy, bake cookies, transport treats, or serve goodies at our sweet shop booth.
Buckner’s International
An annual campaign to collect close-toed shoes and socks takes place in August or September as part of Buckner’s Shoes for Orphan Souls program. Donated items support orphans living in Russia, Romania, Guatemala, and China. In 2004 and 2007, mission teams from our church traveled to Russia and Guatemala, respectively, to minister directly at orphanages run by Buckner’s International.
Women’s and Children’s Shelter
Collecting toiletries, books, and toys replaces necessities often left behind as families seek safety.
SMORE for Women
Encouraging Single Mothers to Grow Their Strengths provides detailed step-by-step guidance for planning and hosting a small and intimate Day of Blessings for single mothers. Three planning meetings are outlined. All of the roles and responsibilities are thoroughly explained. One coordinator is required and a few willing and wonderful women can make this happen. It will be a day that you and the moms will never forget.
